The idea of dieting is always approached with an attitude of looming failure. This is because most people have tried various diets before and failed so they try a new diet again, with the same results. A renowned writer, Henry Ford was once quoted saying, "If you think you can or think you can't you will always be right."

If you think and convince yourself that you’re going to fail, you will be setting yourself up for failure before even getting started. If you don’t examine the root causes of your failure, you are doomed to fail again.  If for sure you are starting a mission planning not to succeed, why would you start it in the first place?

You hold the key to your success as you are in total control of your life. You control of deciding what to eat, when and knowing when you’re eating for necessity and when you’re eating for emotional gratification. You alone can get out of the couch and be on your feet, you alone have the responsibility for every situation you find yourself in. While there are some medical exceptions, trying and failing one diet after another more often than not the whole problem will not be that the diets aren’t working, the problem is you.

In life, everyone is accountable for their actions – both success and failure, which isn’t different in regards to dieting. There is nothing more rewarding when someone compliments you on your efforts. Unfortunately, if you are extremely overweight, it might take longer for people to actually notice any changes in you.  This leads  many people to ‘throw in the towel’ so to speak.  They just aren't seeing results quick enough.

Truth be told, very few people are accountable to their weight loss and dieting goals. This can only mean that the majority of individuals are giving up way too easily. If you find yourself having problems with accountability, you might need a dieting partner or coach. Some of the most successful people in life have a coach in some aspect of their lives.  Millionaires have accountants and investing specialists coaching them continuously about their financial affairs.  Celebrities have several representatives coaching them on what to wear, what acting parts are coming up, etc.  Alcoholics go to meetings to be accountable to someone for their actions.  Reality television shows have complete seasons, one after another, that help people reach their fitness and weight loss goals.  You are not alone.

Today, many top diet meals are packaged in convenient containers, making it very easy for you to stay on their eating plan.  Small gym equipment can be ordered and delivered to your home within days.   The help is within your reach, but you must take the first step.   If you cannot be accountable to yourself with the existing help that is out there, join a program where you must weigh in once a week or you must show everything you ate during the week.  Being accountable to someone else or a group is sometimes the very help you need to succeed.

The Diet and Fitness Connection

The main ingredients to a long healthy life are fitness and diet. Even though some people believe that if they do one, the other will be taken care of.  But this kind of thinking is false. This is because it is very possible to be physically fit but have poor eating habits and it is equally possible to have a healthy diet with awful fitness habits.

Even though it is more difficult to shed off pounds using diet alone, it is very possible. The same way it is possible to have extra pounds even if one is physically fit. To a large extent, you are exactly what you eat; this is to say that if you take a high fat low substance meal, the body will lack fuel necessary to burn fat. On the other hand, if you don’t give your body the necessary tools to build muscle, all the weights you lift will exhaust you, instead of empower you.

It is therefore right to say that fitness and diet should go hand in hand. Use fitness to burn calories and tone or build muscle.  Complement this activity with a healthy diet that will provide the body with necessary nutrients and fuel it requires to build muscle. Be advised that with dieting alone, you can indeed lose muscle tissue.  Weight loss does not just come off your body fat alone. Although the heavier you are, the more body fat you will lose.  But it's vital to remember as you come closer to your goal weight, the risks of losing muscle is prominent as there is less body fat to lose.  Also remember that muscle tissue weighs more than fat.  So never measure your success by the scale alone.   If you measure progress using just the scale, you might be misled, get frustrated and lose hope while you’re actually making progress.

Don’t be the scale’s victim, instead feel how your jeans or pants fit, look in the mirror, or better still, judge by your waistline measurement. In weight loss, you should measure success not just by how many pounds the scale displays, but by how you feel after going up the stairs. By integrating muscle toning into your diet plan, you allow the body to burn any extra calories that you might have added throughout the course of the day. Burn those extra calories with muscle toning activities whether it be with weights or resistance bands.

Combining fitness and dieting together simply works.  Your body will show the results indeed.

It is very saddening to see our youngster's today overburdened by obesity. What is worse, the kid's cannot jump, run or play with their other children their same age because their body just doesn’t allow much activity. Despite all the efforts of parents to shield their kids from self-worth issues that always accompany obesity, putting the child on a very restrictive diet becomes unavoidable.

It is the role of the parent to ensure that a child loses those extra pounds if the child is over the normal weight they should be for their age and height. The first step of action will be to see the child’s doctor to discuss the best course of action that will not sabotage your child’s health. Keep in mind that you will be putting your child’s health on the line if you aren’t ready to take the necessary steps to help them shed off those extra pounds. Unfortunately, more often than not, the parents need to shed extra weight too.

Here are some helpful tips for parents who have overweight children. First off, keep in mind that food is the root cause of your child’s overweight predicament. Yes, there are studies out to show that genes and other factors add to obesity issues; however food is the central core. From early in your child’s life, never reward or punish by food. For example, a piece of candy if they go to the toilet while toilet training. Replace that with a gold star sticker or some other way. Or an ice cream cone if they clean up their room properly is another example. Get rid of the junk foods inside the house, and also ensure, as much as you are possibly able to, that they don’t get access to junk foods when they leave the house. Simply introduce your child to healthy eating alternatives, say by packing their lunch for school. This way they will not buy lunch at school.

Frozen yogurt, a variety of cut up vegetables with low-sugar and low-fat dips, fresh fruit cut up to make it fun to eat and a variety of nuts are some of the healthy snacks that you can incorporate in the family’s eating plan. The key is to provide a well balanced diet, and watch the calorie intake of your kids by getting rid of junk foods. Cut out pop and sugar laden juices and put in place low-calorie lemonade or ice tea.
Encourage your kids and participate in getting the family outdoors and take a sport, dance or just run around the backyard. Finding activities they will enjoy is the key. Secondly, the kids will be burning calories in the process.

The last thing you should ever do, and many of us are guilty of, is to let our children become computer, video game or TV addicts. Technology has made us all lazy, but especially for this generation. Children today are raised with technology all around them and the busiest you may ever see them is when they are text-messaging on their cell phones. But if you incorporate outdoor activities, you will notice over time that your child will have a renewed self-esteem, self-confidence and an improved interaction with peers once they start to shed the pounds.

When all seems not to work, the other alternative that you can assist your child lose weight and build self-esteem is signing them up in camps that are specifically designed to offer such services. By and large, you as the parent should be a good role model. Do not take on emotional overeating, avoid junk foods and be active. This way, you will not reinforce the behavior in your children.

The main reason for dieting and eating right is for your overall well-being, personal health and fitting back into those jeans wouldn’t hurt either. Many overweight people know too well the risks associated by excess weight. However, just like smokers, the risks never appear clear-cut until one reaches a turning point. Your eating habits maybe as a result of addiction to some foods, emotional gratification, or years of acquired behavior and training. Unless you adjust your lifestyle choices and eating habits completely, things will remain the same.

For many, dieting has turned out to be a lifestyle in its own right with people hopping from one diet to another with very little success and rising hopelessness over utter lack of results. But until you’re ready to forgive yourself for past failures and get back on track after failing, don’t expect any diet to be successful. A mere diet won’t make the pounds disappear miraculously and a constant deprivation of the foods you love may cause more harm than good.

One thing that you ought to know is that dieting isn’t what you actually need, what you really need is to integrate positive lifestyle changes in your day-to-day routines. It’s sad that someone will sneer at the idea of using the stairs or parking a few blocks away and walking to their destination, yet these are credible ways of integrating a little physical action into your day.

If you really dislike the idea of walking and working out, what about learning to dance? Most communities have dance classes which welcome new dancers of all size, age and fitness levels. This is a great way to not only get fit, but also have fun as you learn something new. Bring a friend or your significant other along and have some fun. Another great thing about dancing is that you’ll be burning calories nearly effortlessly. The secret here is to get a hobby that will get you on your feet and keep you away from eating temptations. Dieting has to work concurrently with physical fitness in order to achieve favorable results.

A major drawback in dieting is giving up too quickly. People go into dieting with high expectations of dramatic results in no time. But just when you’re starting to show some progress, you get frustrated and give up. This marks off another failure when you could have attained your goals if you could just stick to the diet plan a little bit longer.

Be advised that when dieting, your best friend and worst enemy is the scale. If everyday you weigh yourself with high hopes of seeing the scale go down, you will be dooming yourself to instant failure. Weight can actually fluctuate from one day to the next, especially for women. If you’re working out with weights, you maybe gaining muscle and losing fat. Muscle does indeed weigh more than fat, so do not go by just the scale. Try not weigh yourself everyday, but perhaps twice to once a week instead.

By and large, in dieting, very few diets will work long term if you go right back to bad habits. Lifestyle changes can however work tremendously when practiced aggressively and consistently. You need to change and form good habits for the long standing weight loss success you desire.
